Description

TecCera supplies precision metallized ceramic components designed for reliable ceramic-to-metal brazing, soldering, hermetic sealing, electrical insulation, and high-temperature applications.

Our metallized ceramics are primarily manufactured from high-purity alumina and can be supplied in a wide range of geometries, including tubes, rings, plates, rods, substrates, insulators, and custom-shaped components.

Metallization can be applied to flat, cylindrical, and complex ceramic surfaces using suitable coating and printing processes. Molybdenum-Manganese (Mo/Mn) is commonly used as the metallization base layer, followed by optional nickel, copper, silver, or gold plating according to the joining and application requirements.

Metallization and Plating Options

  • Ceramic + Mo/Mn metallization + Ni plating
  • Ceramic + Mo/Mn metallization + Ag plating
  • Ceramic + Mo/Mn metallization + Au plating
  • Ceramic + Ag metallization
  • Custom metallization and plating combinations

Depending on the required brazing, soldering, electrical conductivity, oxidation resistance, and operating environment, different surface systems can be supplied.

Typical configurations include:

Nickel plating is widely used to improve solderability and brazing performance, while silver and gold plating may be selected when higher electrical conductivity, oxidation resistance, or specific joining characteristics are required.

Applications

Metallized ceramic components are widely used where ceramic electrical insulation, dimensional stability, vacuum compatibility, and ceramic-to-metal joining are required.

Typical applications include:

  • Ceramic feedthrough insulators
  • Hermetic electrical feedthroughs
  • Ceramic headers and receptacles
  • High-voltage insulating rings and cylinders
  • Vacuum interrupters
  • Traveling-wave tubes
  • X-ray tube components
  • RF and microwave components
  • Vacuum electronic devices
  • Sensors and electrical assemblies
  • Power electronic modules
  • Ceramic-to-metal brazed assemblies

Why Metallized Ceramics?

Technical ceramics offer excellent electrical insulation, high-temperature resistance, corrosion resistance, and dimensional stability. However, conventional ceramic surfaces cannot be directly brazed to many metals.

Metallization creates a bondable metallic surface on the ceramic, allowing the component to be brazed or soldered into a metal assembly.

This makes metallized ceramics particularly suitable for applications requiring:

  • Reliable ceramic-to-metal bonding
  • Electrical insulation
  • Hermetic sealing
  • High-vacuum compatibility
  • High-voltage isolation
  • High-temperature operation
  • Long-term structural reliability

Custom Metallized Ceramic Components

TecCera supports customized metallized ceramic parts based on customer drawings, samples, and application requirements.

Customization may include:

  • Ceramic material and purity
  • Component dimensions and tolerances
  • Metallized area and pattern
  • Mo/Mn layer thickness
  • Nickel, silver, copper, or gold plating
  • Partial or selective metallization
  • Ceramic-to-metal brazing requirements
  • Custom shapes and precision-machined features

For customized components, please provide your drawing, dimensions, material requirements, metallized area, plating requirements, quantity, and operating conditions.

FAQ

What is the purpose of ceramic metallization?

Metallization creates a metallic surface on the ceramic, enabling brazing or soldering between ceramic and metal components. It is commonly used in hermetic, vacuum, high-voltage, and electronic assemblies.

Why is Mo/Mn commonly used for alumina metallization?

The Mo/Mn process forms a strong metallized layer on alumina ceramic after high-temperature firing. The resulting surface can then be plated, typically with nickel, to support subsequent brazing or soldering processes.

What ceramic materials can be metallized?

Alumina is one of the most commonly used materials for metallized ceramic components. Other ceramic materials may also be metallized depending on the required process and application. Please contact us with your material and joining requirements.

Can you manufacture custom metallized ceramic components?

Yes. Components can be manufactured according to customer drawings, samples, dimensions, metallization patterns, plating requirements, and application conditions.
