Overview

TecCera supplies Metallized 7-Wave Alumina Ceramic for Vacuum Interrupters designed for vacuum interrupters, high-voltage switching devices, vacuum electronic equipment, and ceramic-to-metal sealing applications.

The corrugated seven-wave structure increases the surface creepage path compared with a simple flat ceramic geometry, helping improve electrical insulation performance in compact high-voltage assemblies.

Manufactured from 95% or 99% alumina, the ceramic can be selectively metallized with a Mo/Mn layer and subsequently plated with nickel, copper, gold, or other compatible metals according to brazing and assembly requirements.

Custom dimensions, wave profiles, metallization areas, plating specifications, and tolerances are available based on customer drawings.

Why the 7-Wave Corrugated Design?

The seven-wave profile is designed to provide a longer surface path between electrically separated areas than a flat ceramic structure of similar overall size.

This geometry can be useful in applications where:

  • High-voltage insulation is required
  • Available installation space is limited
  • Increased creepage distance is beneficial
  • Ceramic-to-metal brazing is required
  • Vacuum-compatible structural insulation is needed
  • Mechanical stability under thermal cycling is important

The exact wave profile, pitch, depth, and overall dimensions can be customized according to the electrical and mechanical design of the assembly.

⸻

Key Features

Extended Creepage Path

The corrugated seven-wave geometry increases the effective surface distance across the ceramic, supporting insulation performance in high-voltage applications.

High Electrical Insulation

Alumina ceramic provides good dielectric strength and stable electrical properties for vacuum and high-voltage equipment.

Reliable Metallization Interface

Mo/Mn metallization provides a suitable metallic interface for subsequent plating, brazing, and ceramic-to-metal joining.

Good Brazing Compatibility

Nickel-plated metallized surfaces can be used with compatible brazing alloys and metal components such as Kovar, stainless steel, copper, and nickel-based alloys.

Thermal Stability

Alumina ceramics offer good dimensional stability and mechanical strength across demanding thermal environments.

Custom Metallization Areas

Metallization can be applied selectively to ceramic end faces or other specified areas according to assembly requirements.

FAQ

Q1: Why is a corrugated ceramic structure used in high-voltage applications?

A: A corrugated ceramic surface increases the effective creepage path compared with a flat surface. This can help improve surface insulation performance while maintaining a relatively compact component size.

Q2: Can the seven-wave profile be customized?

A: Yes. The wave number, pitch, depth, diameter, wall thickness, overall length, and metallization areas can be customized according to customer drawings and application requirements.

Q3: What metallization system is typically used?

A: Mo/Mn metallization is commonly used as the base metallization system for alumina ceramic components. Nickel, copper, gold, or other compatible plating layers can be added depending on the brazing and application requirements.

Q4: Can the metallized ceramic be used for brazing?

A: Yes. Properly metallized and plated alumina ceramic surfaces can provide a suitable interface for ceramic-to-metal brazing. The brazing alloy and mating metal should be selected according to the operating conditions and assembly design.

Q5: Is this product only suitable for vacuum interrupters?

A: No. The corrugated metallized ceramic structure can also be considered for other high-voltage, vacuum, and ceramic-to-metal sealing applications where increased creepage distance and electrical insulation are required.
