Power Electronics

Specialized high-thermal-conductivity silicon nitride substrates can be used in power modules, including IGBT and MOSFET applications. These substrate grades require separately controlled thermal conductivity, dielectric performance, surface quality, thickness, and metallization compatibility.

Generic structural silicon nitride plates should not automatically be specified as power-electronics substrates.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How does silicon nitride compare with alumina in thermal-shock resistance?

Silicon nitride generally offers better thermal-shock resistance than alumina because of its lower thermal expansion, higher fracture toughness, and favorable strength-to-modulus relationship.

A single ΔT value should not be used for every component. Actual thermal-shock performance depends on material grade, thickness, geometry, surface condition, heating rate, cooling medium, and test method.

2. What is the maximum service temperature of a silicon nitride plate?

The allowable service temperature depends on the silicon nitride grade, mechanical load, atmosphere, and required service life.

Many dense silicon nitride grades can operate at approximately 1000–1200°C in air, while higher temperatures may be possible in controlled non-oxidizing atmospheres. The final temperature limit must be confirmed for the specific material grade and operating conditions.

3. Is silicon nitride suitable for corrosive or high-wear environments?

Silicon nitride provides excellent wear resistance and good chemical stability in many industrial environments. However, it should not be described as resistant to every acid, alkali, or molten metal.

Compatibility must be evaluated for hydrofluoric acid, concentrated alkalis, molten salts, molten metals, and high-temperature reactive media.

4. Can silicon nitride plates be customized?

Yes. Available customization includes:

  • Length, width, and thickness
  • Holes, slots, steps, and custom profiles
  • Dimensional and geometric tolerances
  • Precision grinding and lapping
  • Polished surfaces
  • Material grades selected for mechanical or thermal requirements
